Leaving Chicago at 6am on a Saturday morning was one of the best ideas I’ve had lately. I tell you what, driving on empty city streets was liberating– I highly recommend.
My good friend, Lindsey, and I made the trek to our tiny Michigan town today. Road tripping with a friend definitely makes the five hour drive fly by (the 75mph speed limit helps too). Lindsey and I are in similar seasons of life, and spent our ride singing with Lady Gaga and swapping boy stories. The high school nostalgia when we’re together is out of control, and this morning was no exception.
We made a pit-stop at Meijer, (a super Michigan thing to do) and both realized how assimilated to Chicago we’ve become. That grocery store was packed full of country-folk, and I’m not sure when I stopped being one of them.
Driving down the dirt roads to the house I grew up in is something I always look forward to. All my memories bombard me as I drive, and being in-tune with all ages of yourself is pretty spectacular. You know what else is spectacular? The Christmas tree in my parents’ living room. You know what’s better than that? The family here with me. Time to nestle in by the fire and love on my people. Happy Holidays to you and yours!
